The construction team of Tema Intersection Improvement Project won the Engineering Commendation Award of ENAA 2021. This award is given by the Engineering Advancement Association of Japan to individuals and/or teams that have made significant contributions to the development of the engineering industry through their activities. The construction team was awarded in the category of International Contribution for its excellent achievements and potential for development in Ghana.
Tema intersection is located at an important point where two international corridors stretching from Accra, Ghana's capital city, and Tema Port, the country's largest port, link up. In addition, Tema intersection is a five-way road where the roads from Tema City interconnect. The traffic volume is very heavy, and chronic traffic congestion has been a major factor preventing smooth international logistics. As a breakthrough measure, the Ministry of Roads and Highways (Ghana) considered the development of Tema 3D intersection as one of the top priority projects, and two countries have agreed that the project will be implemented through Japan's grant aid. In 2017, Shimizu Corporation and Dai Nippon Construction formed a joint venture and were awarded the first phase of the project. Overcoming unforeseen difficulties during the pandemic, the team successfully handed over the project to the client in June 2020.
It is expected not only to enhance the urban expressway network from Tema to the outskirts of the capital city of Accra, but also to revitalize the logistics in the entire West African region, creating a virtuous cycle of investment promotion and market expansion, and generating sustainable and strong economic growth.
Moreover, the team received a letter of appreciation from Mr. Amoaka Attah, Minister of Roads and Highways of Ghana, following the full opening of the road in May 2020. In October 2020, the team also received the 16th JICA President's Award for its contribution to Ghana's economic and social development through this project and for enhancing the reputation of Japan's international cooperation.
ガーナ・テマ交差点チーム・「エンジニアリング功労者賞・奨励特別賞」を受賞（2021年7月）
ガーナ・テマ交差点改良計画 1 期工事チームは、一般財団法人エンジニアリング協会の主催する2021年度「エンジニアリング功労者賞・奨励特別賞」受賞しました。これは、その活動を通じてエンジニアリング産業の発展に著しく貢献した個人またはグループ対して送られるもので、今回の受賞はガーナでのエンジニアリング活動を通じた国際貢献が称えられたものです。
テマ交差点は、ガーナの首都アクラと国内最大のテマ港からの2 つの国際回廊が交わる重要なポイントであると同時に、テマ市街からの道路も合流する五差路です。交通量は非常に多く、慢性的に交通渋滞が発生し、円滑な国際物流を妨げる大きな要因ともなっていました。その打開策として、ガーナ道路省は最優先事業の一つとしてテマ交差点の立体化を掲げ、日本の無償資金協力にて実施されることが二国間で合意されました。2017 年、清水建設(株)と大日本土木(株)は、プロジェクトチームを組成して、第1期工事を受注しました。コロナ禍での完工に向けて数々の困難を克服し、2020 年6 月に発注者への引渡しが完了しました。
今後、テマ市から首都アクラ近郊に至る都市高速道路網が充実するだけでなく、回廊整備が進むことで、西アフリカ地域全体の物流が活性化され、投資促進と市場拡大の好循環がもたらされ、持続的で強靭な経済成長が生み出されることが期待されています。
同チームは、2020 年5 月の道路全面開通を受け、ガーナ政府アタ道路大臣より感謝状を受領。また、2020年10 月に、当プロジェクトを通してガーナの経済・社会の発展に寄与し、日本の国際協力の評価を高めたとして、第16 回JICA 理事長賞を受賞しています。
